Carl Pilote, a self-taught painter, was born in St-Bruno, Lac-St-Jean, in 1965. He began painting at 15 with gouache paints borrowed from his younger brother, and at 18, he experimented with oils. The early 1990s marked his introduction to acrylics, and he was offered a teaching position. He accepted, but on the condition that he could teach in his own way.
Later, his style took a much more abstract turn. A new passion gave him renewed energy, leading him to paint with a palette knife. Feeling comfortable, he settled into this new space, a blend of abstract and figurative art.
Traveling along the rivers of Quebec, his favorite subject, he immerses himself in the landscape. For him, the rivers represent woman; the rocks represent men; and the trees, he says, are the witnesses to marriage. The mountains represent dreams and challenges, and the sky symbolizes faith.
