Marie Claire Fauteux (1890-1988)
Marie Claire Fauteux studied at the Art Association of Montreal, painting portraits and landscapes. She worked as a mural decorator, and a professor of fine arts.
Her work was exhibited at the Art Association of Montreal and following the First World War she went to Paris with the bursary she received
from the Women’s Art Society in 1921 to continue her studies.
While in France, Fauteux became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. For years she studied with artist Maurice Denis. When the Germans occupied France
Fauteux was held as a prisoner at the Besancon concentration camp. Following her release she created paintings out of the illustrations she had made
and published a book, Fantastic Interlude”, about her internment experience.
She returned to Canada in 1947 and exhibited at Montreal’s Galerie L’Art français.
She became a professor, teaching painting, at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal
