Montreal born artist Steinhouse studied under Anne Savage founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters.

With a degree in Engineering Drawing she was hired to design Anson warplanes. Following this, Tobie went to Paris to study art further at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Steinhouse was exposed to many artists, including Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.
