Montreal born Gérard Castonguay trained and graduated from the École du Meuble de Montréal, the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and the École des Arts Graphiques.

He worked as a graphic designer-illustrator before devoting himself exclusively to painting from the 1980s. His vision of the imagination places him between two styles, surrealism and figurative.

Castonguay’s work is characterized by his disproportionate characters where he combines colors, compositions and lights. The inclination of his plans allows him to offer real dynamism to his works, which according to him, perfectly reflects his personality. He thus considers that his work is the result of his experience.

Castonguay has participated in numerous exhibitions in Canada and the United States, as well as the SNBA Biennale in Paris – Exhibition in Frégus. In November 2011 a retrospective of his career was presented at the Yvonne Bombardier Cultural Center the exhibit was a great success.
