In 1953, Richard Normandin enrolled at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and graduated with a degree specializing in graphic design (1958). In 1961, he became a freelance visual artist and, at the same time, devoted himself to sculpture, entering the provincial competition in 1965. One of his works was exhibited at the Musée du Québec. Throughout the 1980s, he continued his artistic practice, participating in numerous competitions and exhibitions, and teaching occasionally at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and Collège Laflèche. In his body of work, in addition to creating bas-reliefs, he used aluminum, copper, and plastic, sometimes recycled, to create tubular assemblages of strange humanoid forms at various scales. Among his public art interventions, one of his works created during the Trois-Rivières Symposium in 1992, Sonic 15, is installed near the city’s port, while his fountain sculpture is erected at the Laflèche Hospital Centre in Grand-Mère.
