Born in Itabaiana (Paraiba), in northwestern Brazil, Otto Cavalcanti began his pictorial career as a graphic designer and advertising illustrator in Rio de Janeiro in 1952. His favorite early themes, which endured throughout his long career, are music, movement, robotics and nature. Settled in Barcelona since the mid-1970s, he returned to Brazil in 1984.

In 1996 he moved back to the Catalan capital where he remained to continue creating and reinventing his art until his death.
