Artist THÉMISTOCLE WIRSTA (born October 15, 1923; died May 16, 2017). From the series “Introducing Artists from The Ukrainian Museum’s Fine Art Collection”
A painter of the New Parisian School, born in the Bukovyna region of Ukraine; died in Paris, France. Studied painting, sculpture, and architecture in Chernivtsi and in the Academy of Arts in Bucharest. Resided in Paris starting in 1950. Had a number of solo and group shows in Paris, as well as in galleries, museums, foundations, and universities in other European countries, including Ukraine, and the US, Canada, and Japan. Author of abstract paintings in bright colors. In 1983 opened his own studio near Parc Montsouris in Paris’ Rive Gauche (the Left Bank). Received a number of awards, including the silver medal from the Society of Art, Sciences and Literature (Paris, 1968). His works are found in public and private collections.
