Steven KETCHUM- Gouache sur papier signée mesurant 15.75×18 pouces
Born 1983. Currently resides in Seattle.
My artwork is a reflection of confusion seen in the world. The figures in my drawings either don’t understand themselves or each other. I also reflect and meditate on how cultures / civilizations are built and, given enough time, destroyed.
When I begin a piece, it is with nonrepresentational mark making and no intent or thing in mind. Somewhere in this process those loose forms begin to reveal images. It is here I craft a work towards the cues I’m noticing.
The final artworks have unpredictable effects on the viewer; one may see comedy or tragedy, violence or play. I wouldn’t want the viewer to look at the work thinking there’s something specific which I’m trying communicate. The work is not intended to be informative, but evocative.
