Betty Galbraith-Cornell (1916 – 2012)

Born in Montreal, Quebec, she started painting about 1939 and subsequently studied at the Weston School, Montreal under Miss A. B. Stone, and Wilfrid Barnes; Sir George Williams College School of Art under McCorkindale and at the Art Association of Montreal under Adam Sheriff Scott and Harold Beament. She received honours in her primary exams of the Royal Drawing Society of London, England. She is known for her pastel portraits of children also her landscapes and seascapes. Reviewing her 1964 solo show at Goethe House, Montreal Raymond Heard of The Montreal Star noted ‘’She is a talented landscapist whose work should appeal to a wide group of people because it occupies that happy middle-ground between the representational and the abstract… Mrs Galbraith-Cornell paints rural Quebec, the seacost of the Maritimes and Montréal with great zest. She understands her subjects, and is intimately acquainted with all nature’s moods and colors.’’ She won 1st prize at the St.Laurent Exhibition in 1962; 3rd prize at the Nova Scotia Festival of Arts 1in 1962 and 3rd prize at the Quebec Provincial Exposition in 1965. She exhibited at the Robert Oliver Gallery (1946), West End Art Gallery (1951), The Gemst Gallery (1964), Galerie Henaut (1966) and elsewhere.
